Steering Column: Reassembly
- On all steering columns, lubricate both steering column bearings. On tilt column, install steering column support on steering column jacket, and tighten Torx head screws. On tilt column, attach a centering sphere to each steering shaft. See Fig 1.
- On tilt steering column, connect upper and lower shafts. Install retaining ring to secure shafts together. On fixed column, install upper bearing into steering column housing with 2 proper size sockets, which are used as driver and housing support. On all columns, install steering shaft into steering jacket.
- Position steering column housing over steering shaft and onto steering column jacket. Install Torx head screws. On tilt column, position steering column housing lock shoes with tilt lever to align tilt pivot pin holes. Insert tilt pivot pins into holes.
- Seat tilt pivot pins with a punch. Stake each tilt pivot pin at 2 places with punch. Insert tilt spring in steering column housing, and position spring retainer over spring end. See Figure. Using large Phillips screwdriver, install tilt spring and retainer by pushing inward and turning counterclockwise.
- On all steering columns, position lock cylinder housing on steering column housing, and install new tamper-proof bolts. On fixed column, position thrust washer. On all columns, position upper bearing spring and spring retainer over steering shaft, against upper bearing.
CAUTION: Adapter 7100 (J-35899) must be positioned at 45-degree angle from lock cylinder housing to avoid damaging steering column housing.
- Position Adapter 7100 (J-35899) and Spring Compressor (J-23653A) on spring retainer. Compress spring retainer to install retaining ring in groove. Retaining ring must be installed in second (inner) steering shaft groove. After retaining ring is installed, remove spring compressor and adapter.
- Install ignition switch into lock cylinder housing, and secure it with mounting screws. Install shroud bracket on steering column housing. Install turn signal adapter on steering column housing. Install turn signal switch to steering column shaft and housing, and attach switch to turn signal adapter. Install wave washer to shaft and canceling cam on turn signal switch.
- To install lock cylinder, turn ignition switch to unmarked position, and slide lock cylinder into lock cylinder housing until it clicks. Position shroud/housing over steering column and onto shroud bracket. Install switches control module housing/shroud retaining screws through module openings. Install lock cylinder trim ring to shroud. On tilt column, screw in tilt lever by hand, cover it with shop towel, and then tighten lever snug tight using pliers.
- Install steering column to instrument panel bracket. Run park interlock cable along side of steering column housing. Press lock tab on lock cylinder housing, and install park interlock cable into position. See Figure.
- Adjust park interlock cable as follows. Remove console gearshift lever knob. Remove console PRNDL trim plate. Pull up tab on top of cross-lock of park interlock cable. See Figure.
- Place gearshift lever in Park position. Remove any slack from cable, and push tab down with thumb to lock tab in position. See Figure. Ensure gearshift lever operates properly with ignition switch in RUN position. Ensure lever CANNOT be moved when ignition key is removed. If gearshift lever operation is incorrect, repeat adjustment procedure.
- Install left and right switch control modules into housing/shroud, and install mounting screws. See Figure. Position wiring harnesses and interlock cable down along side of steering column, and install wire ties.
- Install steering column upper cover to shroud bracket. Install shroud bracket-to-upper cover screws from underneath upper cover. Carefully mate lower cover with upper cover by attaching upper cover tab fasteners to lower cover notches.
- Install rear control modules housing covers. See Figure. Install steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD R & I under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect negative battery cable.
